In this week’s meeting we will talk about Stop Hunger Now.

Please be sure to fill out the form at the very bottom completely to have your attendance recorded.

Rotary and Stop Hunger Now have been very good partners since 2005. In fact, Rotary helped Stop Hunger Now with its initial growth and continues to be a major partner in the fight against hunger.

Who We Are

Stop Hunger Now is driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Our mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources.

What We Do

Since we were founded in 1998, we have provided over 180 million meals in 65 countries. This year, we will package 45 million meals, and ship over $9 million in donated aid, mainly vitamins and medical supplies.

Based in Raleigh, N.C., we operate meal-packaging programs at 19 cities in the U.S. and in South Africa, Malaysia, India, Italy and the Philippines. At the recent Rotary Convention in Sao Pualo Brazil, about 750 ROtraians helped Stop Hunger Now package over 100,000 meals. Rotarians continue to make a difference to ending hunger in our world.

We have engaged over 500,000 corporate, student, civic and faith-based volunteers in meal-packaging. In just under two hours, a group of 30 to 40 volunteers can package 10,000 nutrient-rich meals for the undernourished globally. We also educate volunteers about hunger and inspire them to help end it.

How We Do It

We distribute meals through feeding programs operated by partner organizations in developing countries that promote education, encourage children to attend school, improve students’ health and nutrition, address gender inequalities, stimulate economic growth, fight child labor, and are part of the movement to address global issues.

We also provide meals in response to crises. And we provide cash grants to partner organizations in developing countries. In 2013, we made $252,800 in grants to partners to support education projects and provide school supplies, and to assist victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

We count on donors for funds to operate our programs, and for in-kind contributions of food and other life-saving aid. In 2013, donors contributed nearly $12 million, including $9 million worth of donated goods through 48 shipments to 16 countries. We are responsible stewards of donations we receive, investing 88.5 percent of expenses in our programs.

One in three people in developing countries suffers from vitamin and mineral deficiencies. By addressing the problem of hunger, we can stimulate relief and longer-term solutions to address a broad range of interconnected humanitarian needs.

We were founded in 1998 by Ray Buchanan, an ordained United Methodist minister and active Rotarian with the vision of ending hunger in his lifetime. Buchanan, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam, previously founded and spent 18 years as co-director of the Society of St. Andrew, a Virginia-based domestic food relief organization.
